Aegon Targaryen burned castles, kingdoms, and armies. But one piece of parchment stopped him cold.
In 10 AC, during the First Dornish War, Prince Nymor Martell sent his daughter Deria to King’s Landing with a letter. Aegon read it, clenched his hand so hard it bled, burned the letter, flew to Dragonstone on Balerion, and returned the next morning to sign a peace treaty with Dorne — a kingdom that had humiliated his sister-wife Rhaenys and had refused to kneel for years.
No one else ever read it. No one knows what it said. Here is everything we know — and the best theories.
The Context: Why It Matters
Dorne was the only kingdom Aegon could not conquer. They refused pitched battles, vanished into the desert, used guerrilla warfare, and killed Lord Lyonel Tyrell and his entire army in the sand. Then Rhaenys Targaryen — Aegon’s favorite sister-wife — was shot down over the Hellholt. Her dragon Meraxes took a scorpion bolt through the eye. Her body was never recovered.
After two more years, the war only paused when Deria Martell arrived with the letter. Aegon read it, clenched his fist until it bled, then flew to Dragonstone. The next morning, he signed peace.
The Theories
1. Rhaenys Was Alive — and Being Tortured
The most popular theory: Rhaenys survived the crash but was captured. Dorne promised a merciful death if Aegon made peace. This explains his rage and immediate trip to Dragonstone.
Problem: If Rhaenys was alive, why not rescue her? Balerion alone could level Sunspear.
2. Rhaenys Was Dead — The Letter Named Her Killer
The letter revealed exactly how Rhaenys died — gruesome details Aegon could not bear to have made public.
Problem: He already knew Dorne killed her. Why would details force peace?
3. Dorne Had a Dragon-Killing Secret
The letter disclosed how the Dornish brought down Meraxes. Dorne could do it again. Aegon decided the price was too high.
Problem: If reliable, why never used again in later Targaryen-Dornish conflicts?
4. The Letter Was From Rhaenys Herself
Written before her death, Rhaenys pleaded with Aegon to stop the war. He honored her final wish.
Problem: Does not fully explain the bleeding hand.
5. Dorne Revealed a Targaryen Family Secret
The most speculative theory. Something from Dorne’s archives — the true reason the Targaryens fled Valyria, or a weakness in their bloodline. So damaging it had to be buried permanently.
What George R.R. Martin Has Said
Martin has confirmed the letter’s contents “will be revealed” — likely in an upcoming Fire & Blood volume. He also said Aegon was “no more moody or brooding than usual” after reading it, slightly undercutting the torture theory.
Why It Is the Best Mystery in ASOIAF
The man who conquered six kingdoms with fire and blood stopped because of words on parchment. Not a sword. Not an army. Not a dragon. A letter.
